Workshop “Future of SUMPs in the region“ (Rijeka, 19 – 20 January)
The focus of the workshop, which was attended by 57 members of the Network and other stakeholders from Croatia, Slovenia, BiH and Serbia, was on the legislative framework and sources of funding for the further development and implementation of sustainable urban mobility plans (SUMPs). The workshop was conducted as part of the CLIMASUM project.

CIVINext Generation Workshop (Leuven, January 30 to February 1)
Representatives of ODRAZ, the secretariat of the CIVINET Slovenia – Croatia – SEE network, participated at the three-day CIVINext Generation workshop intended for CIVINET network secretariats. The main goal was to enable CIVITAS ELEVATE, together with the CIVINETs, to map a definitive ‘toolkit’ for ensuring long-term viability that will help the networks to shape and implement their future strategies.

Study visit of the CIVINET Greece-Cyprus network to Zagreb and Ljubljana (21 – 25 March)

The 10th anniversary of the CIVINET Slovenia-Croatia-SEE network was marked by the international conference “Cities for Climate Neutrality” in Ljubljana (22 – 24 March)
The international conference with an emphasis on the exchange of regional experiences and good practices of sustainable urban mobility, gathered over 150 participants from Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania, Greece, Belgium, Germany and Hungary.
It was an opportunity to gather Network members, cooperate with the partners of the ProSUMP project within the framework of the regional exchange of knowledge and good practices on comprehensive transport strategies in the countries of the Western Balkans, and to network with representatives of five Greek cities, members of the CIVINET Greece-Cyprus network, who were on a four-day study visit to Zagreb and Ljubljana. The network celebrated its 10th anniversary with this three-day event.

Webinar “Transition to a long-term sustainable transport system” (9 May)
The motivation for organizing this webinar was the adoption of an exploratory opinion on the transition to a long-term sustainable transport system at the plenary session of the EESC held in April 2023. The Swedish presidency, which currently chairs the Council of the EU, believes that it is necessary to speed up this transition, so that the EU leads the way in the green transition. The webinar brought together 60 participants from Croatia, Serbia, Greece, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, etc. The webinar was organised by ODRAZ, the secretariat of the CIVINET Slovenia-Croatia-SEE network, in cooperation with the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).

Participation at the final conference of the CIVITAS Fast Track project
Representatives of ODRAZ, the CIVINET Slo-Cro-SEE Secretariat, participated in the conference, presenting the Network with a short pitch as part of the Marketplace – Connect to the wider network section. After that, those interested could learn more about the future activities and plans of the Network, as well as explore the opportunities for future cooperation.

Workshop “Innovative approach to sustainable mobility” (Maribor, 7 June)
The development of innovative solutions in urban mobility was the central topic of the workshop held on June 7, 2023 in Maribor. The emphasis was on an innovative approach to sustainable mobility and the preparation of innovation projects. The workshop was organized by ODRAZ (Secretariat of the CIVINET Slovenia-Croatia-SEE network) in cooperation with the City of Maribor and REGEA (EIT Urban Mobility).

Study visit of the CIVINET Czech-Slovak network to Slovenia (6 – 8 June)
Twenty representatives from Czech and Slovak cities and associations, members of the CIVINET Czech-Slovak network, took part in a study visit to Slovenia, where they had the opportunity to learn about active mobility support measures in Ljubljana and Maribor.

Webinar “Climate and Mobility” (11 July)
Around 50 interested participants from Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Serbia participated. The emphasis was on more livable public spaces in the context of climate change mitigation with support of sustainable mobility and quality transport spatial planning where citizens are involved.

Summer School for Youth: Planning Cities of the Future
The second summer school organized by ODRAZ, the secretariat of the Network, was held at the campus of St. Ivan’s Fortress in Šibenik from July 17 to July 21, 2023. The school brought together 26 young professionals and students from various fields such as civil engineering, geography, architecture, sociology, landscape architecture, transportation, economics, and geodesy from all over Croatia to focus on the theme “Planning Cities of the Future.” On the last day of the summer school, a public presentation of the solutions developed with the support of mentors was held for five selected topics related to Šibenik’s transportation and spatial issues.

Conference “Supporting Cities in Planning Sustainable Urban Mobility” (Zagreb, 21 September)
About 50 participants, representatives of cities, faculties, civil society organizations and other stakeholders gathered. The event marked the European Mobility Week and the European Sustainable Development Week. The workshop was organized by ODRAZ (Secretariat of CIVINET Slovenia-Croatia-SEE network) as part of the CLIMASUM project.

During the conference, the results of the CLIMASUM project were presented. The emphasis was on four thematic manuals that contain recommendations for effective planning of sustainable urban mobility in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Czech Republic. The final part of the program was marked by a workshop on the topic of contributing to the development of sustainable urban mobility in Croatia.

8th CIVINET Forum: On the way to climate neutral cities (Sarajevo, 12 – 13 October)
A special focus was placed on cities from the CIVINET regional network that take part in the EU Mission “100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030.” The Forum gathered around 100 participants – members of the Network from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, students of the School of Economics and Business in Sarajevo and other interested parties.

 

Participation in professional gatherings and international conferences

  • Professional conference for students “The Future of Comfortable Housing” / Zagreb, 25 March
    As part of the conference, the representative of ODRAZ held a lecture on the superblock model, a new approach in traffic-spatial planning that contributes to the transformation of urban units into a more livable space.
  • Final conference of the CIVITAS Fast Track project / Budapest, 16 – 17 May
    Representatives of ODRAZ, the CIVINET Slo-Cro-SEE Secretariat, participated in the conference, presenting the Network with a short pitch as part of the Marketplace – Connect to the wider network section. After that, those interested could learn more about the future activities and plans of the Network, as well as explore the opportunities for future cooperation.
  • EUKI study tour / Bruxelles, 30 May – 2 June
    The emphasis of this study trip was on achieving climate ambitions and a just energy transition in Central and Eastern Europe by empowering representatives of civil society organizations.
  • Placemaking Week 2023 / Strasbourg, 26 – 28 September
    ODRAZ’s Magdalena Makar participated in the workshop Disruptive Placemaking: Examples from Southeast Europe. She presented the activities within the #LivingStreets project carried out by KLIK – Križevački Laboratory Innovation for Climate and #placemaking as part of this year’s ODRAZ summer school, and in the discussion she additionally highlighted the benefits of the summer school and the students’ enthusiasm for changes in space.
  • Urban Mobility Days / Sevilla, 4 – 6 October
    The conference provided a unique opportunity for networking with colleagues from other CIVINET networks and partner organizations of the SPINE project, as well as representatives of other consortia of current EU projects dealing with innovations and initiatives in the field of sustainable transport and public transport for climate-neutral cities. The conference was attended by numerous members of the Network – in addition to ODRAZ (Secretariat), representatives of the cities of Zagreb, Križevci, Ljubljana, Belgrade, Kruševac and Sarajevo, representatives of the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Croatia, the Ministry of Transport of Sarajevo Canton, the Center for Life the middle and others
  • Annual POLIS Conference / Lueven, 29 – 30 November
    The conference was an opportunity for networking, gathering new ideas for promoting good practice and improving sustainable mobility. It was also an opportunity to socialize with other European CIVINET networks and colleagues involved in the Horizon project SPINE.
  • International conference „The Science and Development of Transport – Znanost i razvitak prometa – ZIRP 2023“ / Zagreb, 7 – 8 December
    The emphasis of the conference was on new scientific research in transport and logistics and the future of sustainable urban mobility. The conference brought together scientists and experts in mobility from about 20 countries and was a great opportunity to exchange experiences and ideas, network and position students and young people in a professional environment.

It covers the activities of the Network and members, announcements of interesting events in the field of sustainable urban mobility, updates, and examples of good practice from the EU. This newsletter is received by over 800 interested parties, primarily from Croatia and Slovenia, but also from other countries where the Network operates
